Amit Shah fumes as Delhi BJP aims low

Despite Shah pushing for ‘Mission 60+’ in Delhi, his party men are not confident of achieving the magical figure in the February 7 assembly polls. An internal survey by Delhi BJP predicting the party’s victory on 40 to 45 seats in Delhi has left Shah fuming.

NEW DELHI: The narrative so far has been Prime Minister Narendra Modi envisages and party chief Amit Shah disposes, but the Delhi unit is playing spoiler to ‘Mission 60+’ that the BJP leadership has hoped to achieve in the coming election.

Trashing the report outright, the BJP president has asked party leaders to assess the ground reality ‘scientifically’ and strengthen the party’s base at the booth level. According to the   report, there are 10 to 12 seats where the BJP’s chances of winning are rather dim. Similarly, the BJP has categorised 10 to 15 constituencies as ‘B’ where the party has high chances of winning.

The ‘A-category’ constituencies where the BJP is confident of victory include the 32 seats bagged by it in the 2013 assembly polls. Similarly, the eight BJP strongholds which it lost in the last elections have also been included in the A-category constituencies.

These include Shalimar Bagh, Rohini, Mundka, Delhi Cantonment, Greater Kailash, Karol Bagh, Tilak Nagar and Hari Nagar. All these constituencies were traditional strongholds of the BJP but the party lost them to AAP in 2013.

The survey report said the BJP is hopeful of winning all these seats and this would take the tally to 36 in the Delhi Assembly that is required to form the government. In 2013, the BJP had fallen four seats short of getting majority in the 70-member House.

A senior Delhi BJP leader said the grading of constituencies was done in order to assess the party’s prospects in the assembly elections. “It was an internal survey aimed at assessing the party’s winnability in all 70 constituencies. While the BJP emerged strong in 40 to 45 segments, it has half chances of winning 10 to 15 other seats. A majority of these seats were won by the AAP in 2013 assembly polls,” he said.

The B-category constituencies include Model Town, Shakur Basti, Tri Nagar, Patel Nagar, Moti Nagar, Kasturba Nagar, Malviya Nagar, RK Puram, Sangam Vihar, Trilokpuri, Kondli, Timarpur and Burari among others. “The BJP has represented these seats in the past. Sustained efforts in these constituencies can bring these seats back to the BJP’s kitty,” the BJP leader said. The survey was conducted under the supervision of Delhi BJP general secretary Ramesh Bidhuri.

Sources, however, said the BJP president has disapproved of the report terming it ‘unscientific’ and ‘inappropriate’ and asked party leaders to re-assess the ground reality scientifically. Shah, who has aimed at getting more than 60 seats for the BJP in Delhi, was reportedly furious over the survey report and pulled up local leaders for their ‘lack of confidence’ and unsatisfactory work at the grass root level. Sources said the BJP president directed Delhi BJP leaders to focus on booth management and strengthen the party’s base at the ground level.

It may be noted that Shah has on several occasions pulled up Delhi BJP leaders for their lax attitude in the run up to the Assembly polls. Addressing the state executive meeting of the Delhi BJP recently, Shah had urged party leaders and workers to shed their laidback attitude. The BJP chief, who is also the party’s key strategist, emphasised on micro-management at the booth level as he also appealed to workers to live up to the expectations of the people. He asked workers to focus on door-to-door campaign which, he said, was the best possible way to reach out to the maximum number of voters.

Meanwhile, the survey report has put nearly 10 to 12 constituencies in the C-category where chances of the BJP’s victory are bleak. These constituencies include Chandni Chowk, Balli Maran, Matia Mahal, Okhla, Seelampur, Mustafabad, Sadar Bazar, Bawana, Sultanpur Majra, Mangolpuri among others.

The BJP had lost all these seats in the 2013 elections. Sources said the categorisation of constituencies would help the BJP in channelising its resources in segments where chances of victory are stronger. Similarly, the BJP would put the minority-dominated constituencies at the bottom of the priority list, party leaders said.
