Both the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Aam Aadmi Party
(AAP) are hoping for victory in the Delhi Cantonment Board elections that were
held here on Sunday evening.
As many as 64 candidates were in the fray for the eight seats in
the Delhi Cantonment Board, with the Congress, the BJP and the AAP being the
three major political players contesting the elections in the run-up to the
Assembly polls in the Capital. The Board has around 74,000 registered voters.
Results of the Cantonment Board elections have, usually, been
known to reflect the electorate’s mood in,at least in the Delhi Cantonment
Assembly constituency.
The constituency had witnessed a photo finish of sorts during last
year’s Assembly elections, which had resulted in victory for AAP’s Surender
Singh over BJP’s Karan Singh Tanwar, with a little over 300 votes.
Polling commenced at 8 a.m. and ended at 5 p.m.; counting of votes
will be taken up on Monday, with the results expected to be announced by
evening.
While Delhi BJP president Satish Upadhyay said the AAP had been
making false claims and the BJP would emerge victorious, AAP leaders alleged
that the ruling party was trying to divert votes.
By Sunday evening, however, statistics revealed that than less
than half the number of registered votes had been polled, with the official
turnout pegged at 46 per cent or a little over 34,000 of the total 74,000
voters having exercised their franchise.
