Have done no wrong, won't resign as MP, says Shashi Tharoor on being quizzed in Sunanda death case

New Delhi: Caught in a legal tangle and at the centre of investigation in the mysterious death of his wife Sunanda Pushkar, Congress MP Shashi Tharoor has hit out at the media and a section of his own party which has been demanding his resignation. Firmly defending himself, the senior Congress leader said no one can decide his fate except the law of the land.

"As far as I am concerned, if we are going to become a country in which any charges in the media however unfounded, however false should lead a politician to give up the trust of the voters that he has won the hard way, then what kind of democracy is this. We have rules in our democracy, we have rules in our society, we have laws. I will respect the laws and I have always done so," he said.

The Congress MP claimed that his career as a politician is unblemished and demands that he should resign are 'absurd'.

You've never seen a leak from me in six years, you've never seen one unauthorised revelation or a secret or anything else in my ministerial functions. You have not seen one action or word that would in any way betray the values of our Constitution of our civilisation and certainly there is absolutely nothing in our laws of our country's political discourse that says that an MP must resign as an MP because the media or some sections of the media have decided to invent and concoct conspiracies against him. That is absurd," he said.

While several people from his own party, including senior leader PC Chacko, said that he should step down, the Congress MP said the high command should seek an explanation from the people who have made such demands.

"If anything a Congressman has said, that person should explain to the high command on what basis he has said that," he asserted.

In a dramatic twist almost a year after Sunanda's death , the Delhi Police on January 6, 2015 registered a case of murder. Sunanda was found dead under mysterious circumstances in her room of the Leela hotel in Delhi on January 17, 2014.

According to police sources, the final clarification report of AIIMS mentions that 'death is homicidal' in nature. After registering an FIR in the case, the Delhi Police has been questioning all relevant people including Shashi Tharoor.
